Field Guide to Feathers & Scales of the Sanctuary

I can still remember the moment I first set foot in Sanctuary’s wild savannahs. The air was thick with a smothering heat, the sun burning high above, but all I could think about was the creatures that called this harsh land home as I watched unfamiliar birds circle within the skies. Syl, my little Ornatile, perched on my shoulder, his sapphire scales shimmering in the dappled light as we made our way deeper into the wilderness of the Sanctuary. He always had a way of calming me, his gentle reptilian purring was a constant reminder that I wasn’t alone out here so far from my family and home in Langham's Wreck.

My first encounter was with an Agilis Allum. I had read about them, the heavily armored reptiles with spiky scales, known for their affinity for metals and twinkling gems. But nothing could have prepared me for seeing one in the flesh. It was nearly invisible against the rocky terrain when still, its spiky scales blending perfectly with the stones. I only noticed it because of a glint of sunlight reflecting off its metallic armor in the otherwise subdued light of the nook it hid within. I froze, watching in awe as it gnawed on a chunk of ore, its jaws working with a precision that was both fascinating and terrifying should that rock become flesh and bone.

I couldn’t help but feel a strange kinship with the Agilis Allum. We were both survivors in this unforgiving landscape, and we both determined to make the most of the resources around us as I scavenged the terrain for the medicinal herbs I had come to the Sanctuary for. But there was something more to it, a respect, perhaps. This creature, with its broad head and ringed tail, had adapted to its environment in ways that I could only dream of. As it glanced up at me, its dark eyes meeting mine, I felt a sense of understanding pass between us. I knew then that I was but a visitor in its world, and I had to respect the rules of the land if I were to safely return from the arid climate.

As we continued our journey, the savannah gave way to dense tropical forests, and the air grew cooler. It wasn’t long before I encountered the next marvel of this land: a pack of Argous. I had hoped to see one of these majestic birds, but to find a whole pack was beyond my wildest dreams. The lead female, a sleek, powerful creature, stood watch as the others went about their business, her eyes sharp and calculating as she scanned the terrian for signs of danger. I marveled at their coordinated movements, their loyalty to the matriarch evident in every glance and gesture carefully tipped her way as if asking for permission for what they did next.

I stayed hidden and deathly quiet, not wanting to disturb them or attracted unwanted attention, but Syl, ever curious, let out a soft chirp. The lead Argous turned her head sharply, her golden eyes locking onto us. My heart raced, but I stayed still, hoping that my presence wouldn’t be seen as a threat as I kept my arms low to the ground. To my relief, the Argous simply watched us for a moment before returning to her duties, as if acknowledging our presence, but not deeming our duo worthy of concern.

As dusk began to fall, the jungle came alive with unusual sounds: chirps, calls, and the rustle of thick juicy leaves. It was then that I spotted an Iza’Hyshe, perched on a high branch on a tree near the Horothrux Mountains, its emerald and blue feathers shimmering like liquid fire that threatened to drip off of the lengths. The sight took my breath away. I had heard stories of these rare birds, creatures of legend said to bring fortune to those who encountered them. Seeing one now, in the wild, and so far from the Mother Tree, was nothing short of a blessing.

I watched in silence as the Iza’Hyshe spread its wings, casting a radiant glow across the tropical jungle as it took flight. Its departure left a lingering warmth in the air, a feeling of peace and serenity that stayed with me long after it disappeared into the night. I couldn’t help but wonder if this encounter was a sign, a message from the wilds of Sanctuary that I was on the right path, that my love and respect for these creatures was not in vain.

As I made camp that night, with Syl curled up beside me against the glow of the fire in the cooling desert, I reflected on the day’s journey. Sanctuary was a place of wonder, a land where every creature had a story to tell, a lesson to teach in the story of survival. I knew I had only scratched the surface of what this incredible world had to offer, and I couldn’t wait to see what tomorrow would bring.

Reptiles

Agilis Allum

Agilis Allum Overview

Type: Reptile

Description: Agilis Allum are heavily armored reptiles with spiky scales that help them blend into their environment. They have broad, triangular heads with dark upper lips and tails ringed with long spines. Their scales constantly grow, forming plates of overlapping armor, and their bellies are soft and unarmored.

Behavior: Agilis Allum can roll themselves into a nearly impregnable ball of metal scales when threatened. They use their tails as barbed clubs and can produce a potent acid in glands in their throat as a last defense. They have an affinity for metals and gems, which they eat to create their natural armor.

Special Qualities:

Atrocious Acid | The agilis allum spits acid onto an individual, causing the rating of the target’s equipment to drop by one each turn, for three turns until it stops. If it hits flesh, it does 150 damage per turn for three turns.

Flameze

Flameze Overview

Type: Bird

Description: These birds have stout little bodies that overflow with brown to grey feathers. Special breeders produce “Fancy Flameze” with hints of blues, purples, and other vibrant colors in their feathers. They have exactly three feather tufts on the top of their head and wide eyes, which are a subject of debate—half find them cute, while the other half find them creepy.

Behavior: Flameze lay eggs every other day if they are infertile, making them ideal pets for farmers. If an egg is fertile, it incubates for two weeks before a small pink, fat hatchling emerges. Hatchlings do not walk normally but roll around and flap their useless wings, making wheezing sounds until they reach adulthood. As adults, they behave like regular birds but still make odd wheezing noises instead of tweeting.

Special Qualities:

Pecking Party | A flameze becomes furious with the target and attempts to peck the target to death- or just make them leave - whichever comes first. This causes 30 damage and is multiplied by all flameze in the area.

Loot:

D3 Common Meat

D2 Bones

D2, if 2, 1 Unit of Fire Essence.

Diet: Herbivore; primarily grain.

Products:

D2 Eggs OR Feathers each day.

Care Cycle: 10 days

D2 to test eggs to check if fertile- if 2, incubation will result in a flameze.

Rarity: Common

Other Notes: Nearly all Flameze are domesticated and found on farms throughout Lithoterria. These common farm birds’ eggs are immensely nutritious, and the birds themselves sometimes act as guard dogs, growing up to two feet tall. For an unknown reason, green hats enrage the birds, and they often chase travelers wearing them, attempting to peck them to death in a group.

Iza'Hyshe

Iza'Hyshe Overview

Type: Bird

Description: A majestic-looking bird of the order galliformes, the Iza'Hyshe resembles the Indian Peacock in overall appearance and body structure. It's feathers take on a myriad of different emerald greens and blues, which shimmer when light hits them. Two horn-like tufts of feathers sprout from its head, which seem to resemble the horns or antlers of some cervine creature, like a deer or elk. The most extravagant feathers this bird has to offer, of course, are upon its tail. The "train" consists of the more greenish emerald hues, yet look more "minty." The eyes of these display feathers take on hues of fiery, iridescent reds and oranges, making for a striking contrast from the minty, emerald green of the other feathers. All of the feathers upon the Iza'Hyshe's body, in addition, seem to take on a flowy, fiery form, like that of leaves blowing on the wind, or verdant flames softly flickering. The beak of the Iza'Hyshe is rather long and narrow. It is long enough to partake in the nectar of flowers, but also wide enough to feast on seeds, fruits, and small grubs. It takes on an intense, flowery vermilion color. The base of the beak is a bit pale, the the color intensifies as it reaches the tip. The eyes of the Iza'Hyshe take on a warm, glowing yellow-orange, with a ring of red around them. For some odd reason, the pupils of the bird are yellow, rather than black. The skin of the bird(which is only truly visible on the lower leg) is, of course, a pale, flowery pink.

Behavior: Iza'Hyshe are mostly solitary creatures, and rarely show themselves to the public eye, making them quite a rare sight. In fact, it's considered a blessing to be seen by one. Small groups of them may form on occasion, and larger groups are often found during mating season. It is not yet determined when the Iza'Hyshe mating season is exactly due to not enough data being available currently. Iza'Hyshe mate for life, and bear a clutch of two to three eggs. These eggs are slightly larger than a chicken's, and take on a pale emerald-green hue.

Special Qualities:

Iza'Hyshe’s Blessing | Cures an affliction of choice* or restores one’s Vitality or Sanity up by 50%. The Iza’Hyshe will depart permanently upon use.

*Some exceptions may apply.

Purifying Dome | The Iza’Hyshe casts a dome covering all things in a long range in a blanket of radiance, causing 300 radiance damage per turn one remains in the space. Dissipates after 5 turns have passed.

Loot:

D5 Rare Meat

D5 Bones

D3 Iza'Hyshe Feathers

D2, if 2, 1 Iza’Hyshe Egg

D2, if 2, 1 Unit of Greater Beast Essence.

D2, if 2, 1 Unit of Radiance Essence.

Diet: Omnivore. The Iza'Hyshe typically feasts on seeds, fruits, and small insects. However, either out of its own tastes or when there's nothing else to eat, it will turn to nectar for nourishment.

Products: None.

Care Cycle: 30 days

Rarity: Legendary

Other Notes:

  • Female Iza'Hyshe lack the train feathers males have, and take on darker, somewhat duller colors. This is mostly for camouflage.

  • The best chances of seeing an Iza'Hyshe is being allowed audience with a royal Yui family, as most have them as pets. However, it is still a challenge even here since they are such a prized animal. That family would have to have the utmost trust in said person.

  • It is said that being granted audience with a wild Iza'Hyshe means great fortune, and being chosen by one as a companion means that person is destined to rule something.

  • The train feathers of a male Iza'Hyshe are extremely valuable. They are often used as gifts from royal Yui families for great deeds done for them, and can be made into various tools and accessories, such as pens, hair pins, etc. Those of extremely high social/economic class may also have elaborate capes or boas made from them.

  • It is considered a major crime to kill one of these birds in the wild, unless it is severely injured. Before anything can be done with its body, it must die of either natural causes or a mercy killing.

  • Different parts of the bird are rumored to have magical properties. Such examples include feather pens writing out powerful spells, the eyes being rare alchemical ingredients, and other things.

  • There is a rumored subspecies of the Iza'Hyshe, but it's only speculated. It goes by the Vermillion Iza'Hyshe, and bears feathers of varying reds, and the eyes(both of the train feathers and the actual eyes) are a brilliant, emerald green. The beak is the same color as its relative.
